Negra (2019) - Mexico (72 minutes)

Director: Medhin Tewolde Serrano

About the film: “I was about seven years old when for the first time, someone on the street called me “black.” I turned to see whom they were calling until I understood it was me. That day I found out that I was black, and the laughter from around me made me see that perhaps it was not a good thing... Had this only happened to me, or had it also happened to others?

“Negra” is a documentary that narrates the director’s exploration in a search for other Afro-descendant women and what it means for each of them to inhabit Mexico in the body of a black woman. It braids stories of 5 women from the Mexican southeast, exposing the racism they experienced, sharing processes of resistance and self-acceptance, the strategies built to transcend stereotypes, and celebrating their identity.
