International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination 2024: Humanity, not Racism
The text “International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination” on a multi-coloured background.

Every year on March 21st, the world comes together to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This day serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle against racial prejudice and discrimination, highlighting the importance of fostering understanding, solidarity, and inclusivity in our societies.

As we observe the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination in 2024, it is inevitable for governments, civil society organizations, and individuals alike to reaffirm their commitment to combating racism in all its forms including microaggression. As the first steps to eliminate discrimination, it is crucial to recognize unconscious biases, and how they contribute to the imbalance of power and privilege.

In 2022, Grey Bruce Local Immigration Partnership created the “Conversations for a More Inclusive and Welcoming Community” EDI Training Curriculum. Since then, virtual and in-person training sessions have been offered to organizations throughout the region.

Other organizations are also doing work to eliminate discrimination. For example,

  • The Welcoming Communities Grey Bruce has been organizing the Grey Bruce One World Festival since 2010 to promote diversity and inclusion.
  • The Owen Sound Police Services has recently received the Proceeds of Crime Front-line Policing Grant from the Office of the Solicitor General to implement a 3-year project to raise cultural awareness and eliminate hate in Owen Sound and area.

Together, we can create a brighter future where the principles of equality and justice are upheld, and the bonds of unity continue to strengthen our community

“A truly multicultural society demands our effort, our attention, and our care… each of us must continue to step up and be allies as we combat racism and discrimination in all of its forms.”

The Honourable Bardish Chagger
