Ramadan takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. In 2024, Ramadan begins on March 11 and ends on April 9.

For Muslims in Canada and across the globe, it symbolizes a period of fasting, prayer, introspection, and community support. For all Canadians, it is “an opportunity to remind ourselves of our collective commitment and duty to uphold the value of peaceful coexistence…”(Government of Canada)

According to the 2021 Census data, 595 Muslims resided in Bruce County, while 520 in Grey County. Among the religions in both counties that are not Christianity, Islam has the highest population. In Bruce County, people of Islamic faith started gathering for prayers at individual homes on a rotating basis in 2009. The Kincardine Islamic Centre was then founded in 2014 and continue to serve the Muslim population in the region to this day. In 2016, the Owen Sound Muslim Association opened its doors to its faith community in Owen Sound and area, as well as in Grey Bruce at large.

“As Muslim communities observe Ramadan with kindness and compassion, we are reminded of our collective duty to stand against Islamophobia, racism, and hate in all their forms, wherever and whenever they occur.” (Statement by the Prime Minister on Ramadan)
