The Grey Bruce Chinese Heritage & Culture Association will host Lunar New Year festivities across the region for all to enjoy from mid-January through to the Lunar New Year, January 22, 2023, and beyond.
Lunar New Year is a celebration of the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. Unlike under the Gregorian calendar, with New Year’s Day always falling on January 1, Lunar New Year depends on cycles of the moon.
Lunar New Year is celebrated by those who follow the lunisolar calendar, including countries such as China, South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Mongolia and Indonesia, as well as diaspora communities all over the world. Similarly, Tibet, Thailand, India and other South and Southeast Asian cultures celebrate new year’s based on local lunisolar calendars.
Although specific celebrations and formal dates encompassing the holiday vary by country and culture, one common thread runs through it: it’s time to reunite with immediate and extended family to ring in the new year.
In the Chinese zodiac, 2023 is the year of the rabbit. In the Vietnamese and Gurung (Central Nepal) zodiac, the cat replaces the rabbit. In the Malay zodiac, the mousedeer replaces the rabbit. We also acknowledge that many Asian American and Pacific Islanders do not follow the Chinese/Lunar zodiac.
